From 2001 to 2007, the number of subscribers for broadband have grown from a low 1.4million household to a staggering 6.27million. That is a growth of 450% throughout those 7years. It has even exceeded the target of 6million household subscribers for 2007.
This result is supported by the second diagram which showed an increase in digital opportunities all across Taiwan. This means that there is a widespread of ICT transformations and more people are aware of the benefits. On top of the city areas, the rural areas are also getting the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an upgraded ICT infrastructure. Every part of Taiwan has more than 65% of digital opportunity, close to 30% increase since 2002. People, businesses, culture, economy are now more connected, and changing at an even faster pace than it is before because more people are now empowered with ICT exposure such as " surfing the web for information ".
With new technology especially in the wireless sector, the new and upcoming WIMAX technology, coupled with the already advanced Wi-Fi & 3G infrastructure, is definitely helping Taiwan in improving its healthcare services, education, business communication and government bodies. The wireless coverage has gradually extended to the least reachable areas with the help of these new technology, a total of 140 public access points. Large amount of information can be processed electronically, thus saving manpower, cost and trees at the same time.
