Consolidated webinar Q&A
Transitioning from IVLE to LumiNUS
Can we use both LumiNUS and IVLE simultaneously?
It depends on what you mean by simultaneously.
The most important thing to note is that IVLE and LumiNUS are not connected, so what you create in one does not exist in the other.
For example, you can:
- create certain modules in LumiNUS and others in IVLE, or
- create all your modules in IVLE and create unpublished modules in LumiNUS for testing.
What you should avoid is to create the same module in both IVLE and LumiNUS, and expect your students to use both1 . This will be confusing for you and your students.
Can we try the LumiNUS next semester, but not open to students yet? I am thinking of familiarizing myself with the LumiNUS and publish when I am comfortable with it, while at the same time using IVLE which I am already used to.
Since LumiNUS and IVLE are not connected, you can do this. You can create and publish a module in IVLE. You can also create the same module in LumiNUS, but not publish it. We do not suggest switching halfway during the semester as this will confuse your students.
Can admin or faculty have a student view for reference?
Student view/preview mode is not in LumiNUS. Items that students cannot see are indicated with the "not visible to students" icon or are marked as closed. The not visible icon also states the reason that the item is not visible to students, allowing the lecturer to directly take action to rectify, without toggling between edit and student view modes.
Is there a plan to support exporting question bank from IVLE to LumiNUS?
You can export your existing question bank from IVLE to QTI format, then import the QTI file into LumiNUS.
Files & E-Reserves
Question about uploads. Will there be a 1GB file size limit on LumiNUS?
Yes, there is still a 1GB file size limit per file.
For grading and commenting on individual files, are other students able to see other students' grades and comments?
Students can only see their own grades and comments.
Is Turnitin integrated to Files?
Yes, it is already integrated.
How will librarians upload E-Reserves readings into LumiNUS?
There is a library administration section for librarians to upload readings, similar to IVLE.
Are students allowed to ask questions and post replies in the Forum anonymously in LumiNUS?
There is setting to allow posting anonymously, which is controlled by the manager of the forum.
If I attach a file in the Forum, can students read the attached file using their mobile phones? It seems they cannot do so in IVLE?
Students can read attached files using their mobile phones. Do note that the phone needs to be able to open the particular file type. This is not a LumiNUS/IVLE limitation.
Can we subscribe guests to the forum topics?
Yes, similar to how it is done in IVLE. You will need to grant access to guests.
Is there audio submission in the Forum?
No, there is no audio submission.
Does Gradebook link to IMMS?
At the moment, users will have to export grades to a spreadsheet, then import into IMMS.
Gradebook integration with LumiNUS is dependent on NUS IT building an API (think of it as a socket we use to plug into) to allow LumiNUS to connect to IMMS.
When it is developed, it will work similar to how IVLE works with IMMS.
This will be ready by AY19/20 at latest.
Can we use IVLE predominantly and use just Gradebook in LumiNUS?
You can do this, but it is not advisable. You would need to import everything manually as the module in IVLE and LumiNUS are not linked.
I noticed the Lesson Plan has been removed from LumiNUS.
It is replaced by Learning Flow. This is not a tool by itself. When activated, it is integrated into the Module.
Do the students have a calendar view of their Lesson Flow?
Lesson Flow shows the module resources in a week-by-week or topic-by-topic view, not a calendar view. Students can view consolidated deadlines on the Dashboard.
Can videos recorded via TechSmith (Camtasia) Relay be integrated into Learning Flow like in IVLE?
TechSmith Relay is not integrated to LumiNUS as it is scheduled to be deprecated. You may use Panopto for screen recording that is integrated with LumiNUS.
Can my Breeze presentations stored in IVLE Multimedia be used in LumiNUS?
Breeze presentations are accessed via unique URLs. You will have to add those URLs to LumiNUS.
Do note that Breeze is being phased out as it is built on outmoded and unsecure technologies. It will be best if you can update your content using other tools.
Is there a limit for size of video upload?
Direct uploads to Multimedia are capped at 1GB per file.
Project & Evaluation
Will the replacement for Project - Evaluation - be available by AY18/19 S2?
Currently, we cannot commit to a firm date for this. The replacement tool, Evaluation, will have a different feature set. It is not a one-for-one replacement of Project. Nevertheless, you will be able to replicate most of the Project tool functions by using Evaluation (when it is available) in conjunction with other tools.
In IVLE, we used to create a new project first, then create project groups. If Project is not available in LumiNUS, does it mean we cannot create project groups?
No, you can still create project groups for your module in Class & Groups. It is just that they will not be linked to a Project tool. These groups can be used to assign permissions for various other tools.
What question formats are available for Quiz?
All question formats currently available in IVLE will be available in LumiNUS.
Can SCORM videos run on LumiNUS?
We are currently working to bring the SCORM tool to LumiNUS.
Will new web lectures only be available in LumiNUS from AY18/19? Meaning staff who wish to record web lectures must set up the module in LumiNUS?
Yes, new web lectures will only be available in LumiNUS from AY18/19. Staff may still use IVLE for all the other tools aside from Web Lecture, and link to the Web Lectures in LumiNUS. Please refer to the Web Lecture FAQ for more details.
Can we link directly to Web Lecture from IVLE? Does this mean that students have to log in to LumiNUS?
If you are using IVLE, our Web Lecture team will do this for you. The link to LumiNUS Web Lectures will be in Multimedia of your module in IVLE. Please inform your students about this as Web Lecture is usually not in Multimedia. When students click the Web Lecture link in IVLE, they will be brought to LumiNUS, where they can watch the Web Lectures. They will need to log in to LumiNUS separately.
Note that the Web Lectures and the Module in LumiNUS must be published in order for the students to view the Web Lectures.
Who do we contact to record web lectures for LumiNUS?
The existing Web Lecture Request form will continue to work.
Are the webcast links embedded in LumiNUS as well?
New web lectures will only be published in LumiNUS.
Is LumiNUS developed in-house?
Yes, it is build from ground up for NUS. It is not an off-the-shelf product.
What technology is LumiNUS developed on?
It is developed using Angular and .NET Core.
Are guest student accounts supported?
Yes, guests are supported. Guest access is managed on the Guest & Groups tab.
Are corporate modules be supported?
Yes, corporate modules are renamed non-academic modules. This has yet to be fully tested. It should be ready when beta is launched.
Is Chinese character input supported?
Yes, LumiNUS supports Chinese character input.
Is LumiNUS compatible with Mac and iOS?
Yes, it is.
Is there a LumiNUS mobile app?
Yes, there will be LumiNUS mobile apps for Android and iOS. However, they are unofficial.
The LumiNUS website is mobile-friendly, and it should suffice on most mobile phones and tablets.
Will there be training on how to use and set up LumiNUS features?
Training for LumiNUS will be conducted from AY18/19 Semester 2 onwards. For the moment, you may access the staff guide.
Where can we ask questions about LumiNUS in the future?
You can ask questions, report bugs and request for help at LumiNUS helpdesk (NUSNET login required).
|1||This does not apply if you are recording web lectures (which will only be available in LumiNUS), and you intend to use IVLE for your module. In this case, the bulk of your module will be hosted in IVLE, and it will point to Web Lectures in LumiNUS. Please refer to the Web Lecture FAQ.|
