In this section, there will be statistics on:
- gauging Singapore households' ownership of infocomm devices and subscriptions to infocomm services;
- assessing the level of sophistication and extent of of Singaporeans' infocomm usage;
with the range from year 2000 to 2007.
2. Survey Methodology
In this statistics, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore selected sample from the Household Sampling Frame.
This sample is maintained by the Department of Statistics (DOS), using two-stage of stratified sampling so as to ensure random sampling results and clear representation of the statistics.
The time period conducting the survey wad from 4 Oct '07 to 29 Feb '08 with 4,400 households and 6,000 individuals successfully inteviewed.
3. Home Computer Penetration
From figure A1, there is 18% increase in number of ownership of computers in each household from 61% in 2000 to 79% in 2007.
There is also 26% increase in number of households owning 2 or more computers from 14% in 2000 to 40% in 2007.
4. Computer Access in Households with School-going Children
As schools are encouraging kids to learn how to study independently, computers and internet connection are the must-need for them to get access to vast amount of information online.
Furthermore, there are more and more schools starting to use the "Integrated Virtual Learning Environment" to impart information to the students, or even give assignment online.
This greatly encourages students to own at least a computer at home so that they are able to access to school work or assignment conveniently.
From figure 2A, there is 6% increase of household, with school-going children, having computer access from 86% in year 2005 to 92% in 2007.
5. Home Internet Access
From figure 3A, there is 24% increase in number of households having internet access from 50% in 2000 to 74% in 2007.
This shows how IDA is getting closer to its goal of having Singapore totally connected, wired and wireless.
6. Computer and Internet Users
From figures A4 & A5, there are increase in number of both computer & internet users from 2000 to 2007.
Thus, it can be inferred that there are increase in both computer & internet literacy of Singaporeans.
7. Internet Activities Engaged in by Users
The table A1 shows how internet users are making use of the Internet to do their daily activities or even important stuffs such as banking.
8. Home Internet Security
By comparing two figures in A8, Singaporeans are becoming more and more aware of internet security and do know how to protect their own computers as there is greater percentage of people installing internet security software in their computers.
