Overview

We do not provide direct links to the files as the links change when the version number changes.

Step 1: Download Audacity

  • Download Audacity for Mac.
  • You will see the following screen.

  • Click System Requirements if you are not sure whether your computer will run Audacity.
  • Click the respective link for your Mac OS and hardware.
  • For most users, this should be Mac OS X (Intel).

Step 2: Install Audacity

  • Open (double click) the Audacity disk image (.dmg) file. This will mount the Audacity virtual drive. Your browser may have already done this for you.
  • Drag and drop the Audacity icon to the Applications folder.
  • Delete the Audacity disk image (.dmg) and eject the Audacity virtual drive.

Step 3: Download LAME encoder

Why do I have to install the LAME encoder?
Audacity needs the LAME encoder to create files in mp3 format.

  • Go to the LAME encoder page.
  • Scroll down the page until you see For Audacity (version number) or later on Mac OS X (Intel or PPC), or Audacity (version number) on Mac OS X (Intel), as shown below.

  • Click the respective link for your Mac OS, hardware and the version of Audacity you downloaded.
  • For most users, this should be Lame Library (version number) for Audacity on OSX.dmg.

Step 4: Install LAME encoder

  • Open (double click) the Lame Library disk image (.dmg) file. This will mount the Lame Library virtual drive.
  • Open (double click) the .pkg file and follow the installation instructions.
  • Delete the Lame Library disk image (.dmg) and eject the Lame Library virtual drive.
